A commercial cinema environment uses an array of direct radiating surrounds (monopoles) to create an enveloping, diffuse rear soundfield. But when placed close to the monitoring position in a typical studio space, conventional direct radiating loudspeakers become extremely directional, and therefore highly localizable, which can be distracting on soundtracks that require a non-specific, diffuse soundfield.
